Our bodies are the map we use to find our way in the world, and for a newborn that map is measured in arm's lengths. A baby's field of vision is basically the space they are held in, so their first encounters with the world are very literal and very close. Artists across time and cultures have been preoccupied with how bodies sit inside rooms and structures, and Magda and Lucina will explore why the body keeps turning up in the work on show.
Babies learn through touch, movement and the tiny negotiations they have with their carers, which is why Emily Casey, Program Convenor, Kids & Families, will bring out tactile materials designed to support a baby's aesthetic curiosity as well as their motor and social skills. Expect textures, simple sensory play and an excuse for carers to practise their best cheesy coos.
