If you are a Canberra mum with a toddler or two and have some time on a Wednesday, Little Cygnets might be exactly what you’re looking for.

This free learn-and-play experience is designed by the Early Learning Centre (ELC) specialists at Canberra Girls Grammar School (CGGS). It is open to all families with children ages one to three. Sessions are built around inquiry-based play, introducing young children to early literacy, numeracy and hands-on exploration. It's the similar floor-level fun that you know at home, but this time with a specialist supporting and leading the way - and other mums doing it alongside you.

"Often when I speak with families, they are seeking an environment for their child that is appropriate for their developing minds. They feel that traditional playgroups and day-cares sometimes don’t inspire a sense of creativity, imagination or problem-solving," says PeterMcDonald, Deputy Principal, Head of Junior School and ELC at CGGS.  Little Cygnets is purposeful without being rigid. Mums who pour everything into their little ones will love having a space that meets that energy and will immediately notice a difference to other activity groups.

Activities span arts and crafts, reading, drawing, music, language play and open exploration, the kind of activities that keeps curious minds engaged. It is a great morning out for little ones and the grown-ups alike. It's also (quietly) a great place to meet other mums in the same season of life. And who knows, the family you chat to over playdough may even walk through the CGGS gates with you in a year or two!

Little Cygnets is held in the Kamberri space of the Early Learning Centre at CGGS, a beautiful, purpose-built environment that feels a little different (and fun!) to a formal classroom.

You may be thinking, "but my child learns differently." The CGGS Little Cygnets program is designed with exactly that in mind. We know every child is different, and so is every session. They're age-categorised, themed, story-led experiences designed to feel genuinely exciting for toddlers (and honestly, for adults too).

Little Cygnets sessions include:
Music and Melodies: brings ribbons, scarves and instruments to life through movement and song.
Under the Sea: transforms the space into an ocean adventure complete with puppets, bubbles and water play.
Mini Builders: hands children soft blocks, tools and loose parts to stack, lift and construct to their heart's content.
Tiny Scientists: gets into colour mixing, fizzing reactions and floating objects. Curiosity clashes with creativity!
Where is the Green Sheep?: brings the beloved picture book to life with a real search through the Kamberri space, plus playdough and small-world play.
Autumn Leaves: invites children to rustle, press and explore seasonal textures through sensory trays, leaf rubbings and soft music.
Tots and Dots: makes early maths genuinely fun through dot painting, circles and hands-on games.

Every session runs for 45 minutes, and while each one supports early motor skills and curiosity, the most fundamental learning outcome is simpler at its core - children have a really good time.

Watch your Wednesday light up with a little one in tow!
