Choosing the best start possible
Starting school is one of life's most significant milestones, and it can be an emotional time for children and their parents.
With its welcoming, nurturing environment and inquiry-based program, Canberra Girls Grammar School's (CGGS) Early Learning Centre (ELC) provided the perfect start for Christine and George's daughter Stefania.
"Like any parent, we were nervous about her first day — it is a big build-up! But any nerves disappeared as soon as she walked through the door," Christine says.
"The Centre was calm and supportive and the classes were smaller, so it wasn’t overwhelming for Stefania. She just walked right in with a wave and joined an activity which really engaged her. It was so reassuring — she's never looked back. We are confident she could not have had a better start to her schooling than the time spent at the CGGS ELC and Junior School."
Years on, Christine and George’s daughter is now in Year 8 at the CGGS Senior School, and they say she is "absolutely thriving with the incredible teachers, warm community and tailored programs. She particularly loves the fantastic choice of sporting and academic co-curricular options. Her journey at CGGS is exactly what we hoped for."
At the CGGS whole-school Open Day on Thursday 1 May, parents will have the opportunity to tour the co-educational ELC and the Junior and Senior Schools, meet staff and students, view the state-of-the-art facilities and learn about the curriculum and Signature Programs, which include a research-informed pastoral care program that supports social and emotional development.
Deputy Principal and Head of Junior School Peter McDonald says the ELC is a wonderful introduction to a world of discovery, where curiosity is encouraged.
"Our ELC is purpose-built to meet children's needs and provide them with time, space and opportunities to explore the world and discover their unique place within it. This schooling start sets a strong foundation for a lifelong love of learning," Peter says.
All ELC classes are coordinated by passionate and highly qualified teachers. The School provides a sense of consistency and continuity of learning for their students, with a play-and inquiry-based program integrating the Early Years Learning Framework with the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme. CGGS is co-educational from the ELC to Year 3, then female-focused through to Year 12.
As a mid-sized school, CGGS places a strong emphasis on a balanced, broad-based education in a culture that celebrates authenticity and originality. The School's bespoke Signature Programs inspire respect, empathy and kindness, offering a comprehensive framework that nurtures academic, emotional and social growth.
"From the ELC right through to Year 12, students are set on a path to become confident and capable young adults," says Peter.
As well as its Signature Programs, Peter says the School's extensive co-curricular offering, Cygnus at CGGS, really sets it apart.
"Within the Cygnus program, student interests are catered for across a huge array of co-curricular activities. We offer over 100 options such as art, sports, dance, chess, cooking, debating, robotics and much more, encouraging students to lean into their strengths, explore a myriad of opportunities and thrive," he says.
Peter says choosing a school is one of the most important decisions to make — he knows that the upcoming Open Day will confirm for young families that CGGS is the "right place."
"At this Open Day you will feel we are in an exciting chapter of the School. We will soon celebrate a Century of inspired learning, where young people have never stopped believing that anything is possible," he says.
