Discover a lifetime of learning at Canberra Girls Grammar School (CGGS)
From the excitement of the first day of Kindy to the achievement of graduating Year 6, the Primary School experience is a significant milestone in a child's growth, establishing the groundwork for future learning.
With dedicated teachers, a focus on smaller classes and enriching pastoral care programs, CGGS sets students on a clear, confident pathway through those crucial Primary School years.
“Our curriculum guides our students on a dedicated learning journey, preparing them for high school and beyond,” says Deputy Principal, Head of Junior School Peter McDonald.
“At this age a child’s brain learns, grows and develops at an astonishing pace as they make sense of the world. At CGGS we hold an unwavering belief in this potential. Our experienced teachers harness the power and possibility of this development, knowing that consistent and targeted early literacy and numeracy are the cornerstones of successful schooling—and for life beyond the classroom.”
Peter is looking forward to welcoming families to the School’s upcoming Open Day on Wednesday 13 August, which is a chance to learn about the curriculum, the evidence-based, age-appropriate Signature Programs, meet staff and students and tour the Junior School and ELC campuses.
With a focus on pastoral care and a tailored learning environment so that each individual child is known and cared for, CGGS is at the forefront of educational innovation in the ACT. The School has consistently produced outstanding NAPLAN and ATAR results, and is the only ACT school to be recognised as an Excellence Awardee and Finalist for Primary School of the Year (Non-Government) in the Australian Education Awards.
Unique to CGGS is also its suite of Signature Programs—specialised initiatives that begin in Year 3 to form the foundations for inquisitive, compassionate and clearsighted young learners. Embedded in the academic, co-curricular and pastoral domains, the programs empower students to build personal capacity, relationships and essential skills in preparation for the next stage of their educational journey.
As the first International Baccalaureate (IB) Continuum school in the ACT, the School’s IB programme has been particularly instrumental in preparing the youngest students in the ELC to be curious, confident and capable learners.
The Primary Years Programme (PYP) spans three-year-old Reception to Year 5, before moving into the balanced Middle Years Programme (MYP) in Year 6 through to Year 9. The MYP is designed to meet the developmental needs of students aged 11 to 16 years of age, nurturing a love of lifelong learning through the intentional teaching of ‘learning to learn’ skills, which encourage critical, creative and self-directed thinking and action.
“Choosing the right primary school is one of the most significant decisions a parent will make—at CGGS, the formative years from Kindergarten to Year 6 are crucial in shaping a child's character, intellect and social skills. Our highly intentional learning environment ensures a personalised approach so that every student reaches their full potential,” Peter says.
